Situated on the dramatic north coast of Madeira, in the idyllic village of Ponta Delgada with breath-taking views of mountain and sea, the ancient house of Casa da Capelinha offers you a tranquil retreat away from Funchal’s traffic fumes, hawkers and jostling crowds for you to enjoy the sound of silence and sea breeze at any time of year.
One of the few wine producing manor houses in Ponta Delgada still owned by a local family, it was developed in 1996 by the owners Carlos and João (brothers) and wifes Maria da Paz and Isabel create four apartments with modern comforts for sanctuary seekers to enjoy.
The upper floor of the manor house has two one-bedroom apartments (T-1) each with their own balcony overlooking the original winepress, swimming pool and awe-inspiring unending vista of sea crashing into massive cliffs. The ground floor has a studio (T-0) and a one-bedroom apartment with connecting doors which make it possible to accommodate a larger family. These both have direct access to the romantic garden, pool area and barbeque.
As a result of a surge in demand for accommodation, the family decided in 2003 to build eight more modern self-catering apartments with stunning sea views, the sunbathed swimming pool, an intimate restaurant, Baixas Café with shaded terrace overlooking the harbour, secure car parking and Wi-Fi access in the pool area, gardens and apartments.
In the garden above the apartments is the village’s little chapel “Capela dos Reis Magos” (The Three Wise Man Chapel) from which the house takes its name. Dating from the 16th century, Carlos and Maria have lovingly restored it and their guests are especially privileged to visit it.
Casa da Capelinha is also a good base for people wishing to explore the nearby
UNESCO World Heritage site - The Madeira Natural Park or Laurisilva and experience the unique endemic flora and fauna.
