The Casa Velha do Palheiro was built in early 19th Century as a hunting lodge for the Count Carvalhal and was bought in public auction in 1885 by John Burden Blandy. The Casa Velha (“Old House”) was restored in 1996 and opened on 1st May 1997 as Madeira’s first five star Country House Hotel. Five bedrooms were restored, and three master bedrooms were converted to Junior Suites. Two new rooms were added overlooking the plane tree avenue. Today the Casa Velha has three separate buildings: The “Old House”, with public areas, 3 “Junior Suite Main House” and 7 “Double Main House” rooms; the “Garden Wing” with 14 “Double Garden Wing” rooms and the “Golf Wing”, overlooking the golf course, which houses 3 “Senior Suite Golf Wing”, 10 “Double Golf Wing” rooms and a sitting room.

 

 

 

Nestled in the hills to the east of Funchal, Casa Velha do Palheiro is situated just 7km from the centre of Funchal and 15km from the airport. Bordered by renowned Palheiro Gardens - with centenary trees, believed to be given by Dom João VI, King of Portugal, to his friend the Count – and the Championship Palheiro Golf Course – which has been included in the "TOP 200 Golf Courses in Continental Europe" of the Golf World magazine.

Guests at the Casa Velha may enjoy a wide variety of menus including the À La Carte menu, Daily menu, Light Meal menu and our Gourmet menu.

The Light Meal menu is available for lunch and for room service. This menu may be served in the Restaurant, Bar, Morning Room or in the privacy of your room.

The Gourmet menu is a seven-course taste experience, prepared per table and includes three different accompanying Portuguese wines.

 

Conference and Meeting facilities

The Casa Velha also has availability to accept small groups for meetings and conferences. The conference room includes TV, DVD, Flip-chart, Wifi service and meeting table. Other equipment available on request.
